Catching Up

This is the first weekend I've had home in three weeks. I went to the New Jersey Romance Writers conference last weekend (Sherlynn Kenyon gave an inspiring speech, which I wish I had taken notes on, because she said she was retiring it, but, basically it was about believing in yourself and never giving up. She told the story of how her home was almost in foreclosure, she had medical bills up to the ceiling and hadn't sold a book in over a year. She has one stamp in her wallet and she received a list of editors names from the RWA newsletter and found that a woman who had once been her agent was now an editor, mailed a partial to her and sold her novel) and had a mid-week one-day trip to Chicago to close a deal. So, I was exhausted this weekend and spent a good part of it sleeping in and then sorting through the carry-on debris of my life, meaning books and bags and pens collected at the various writers' conferences.

Also decided that this was the weekend to separate the summer from the winter stuff and box it up again.

I guess in an odd way I'm thankful that the Yankees aren't in the play-offs because it gives me a little extra time to catch up. (I am a devoted Yankees fan from April through October, but I watch no sports the rest of the year, so I guess this is when I do most of my reading). For the record, I do not hate the Red Sox. I have always said that if the Yankees didn't exist, and the Mets weren't playing, I'd be a Red Sox fan (they are always a good team, and I do love to beat them), so I find myself in the unusual predicament of rooting for the emeny because I cannot bring myself to root for a team with such a racist logo in this day and age.

And I have decided that this is the time to dig out that copy of THE GIRL WHO LOVED TOM GORDON, so that is what I'll be reading for pleasure.

Lori,
Have you read 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy, or 'The Lovely Bones' by Alice Sebold? They are outside of what I normally read, but I enjoyed them! :*)

On the list to read, but I have to be in the mood for both of them. The published fiction I read is usually lighter.

From a Sox fan who has a partial with you:

Thank you. I feel the same way. Rivalry aside, I'd root for the Yankees if there were no Red Sox team. And if we weren't in the playoffs, I actually would root for the Yanks. (And I'd take Joe Torre as Sox skipper any day of the week!)

Who says Sox-Yanks fans can't have a truce??

Either that or start watching hockey.

Wow, that does sound like a great speech...only makes me hope I am not quite *that* badly off before I (or, actually, my agent) sell my novel!

By the way, I'm a devoted Red Sox fan, but I don't hate the Yankees (which is a good thing, since my husband is a Yankees fan). If you like to watch good baseball, it's hard to hate either team.

I loved "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon," a book I would never have read other than I joined a library group called "Great Reads." Every month we read a book from a different genre. History, science, mystery, romance, horror--I would never have read some of these amazing books if it weren't for that club.

I don't like the logo either, but the guys on the field in Cleveland didn't pick it and they're playing their hearts out. I could never root for teams who buy their way into the playoffs every year with ridiculous salaries. Give me Cleveland any day of the week. And yes, they should change the logo. Rumor has it that they're phasing in the script "I" and phasing out the Indian.

I'm also a Red Sox fan who doesn't hate the Yankees, although I do love to beat them.

I agree about the Indians logo. It's not the same of the team itself, but that grinning caricature. Why on earth don't they change that?

Wow. Those sort of inspiring stories are rare.

I'm cursed to be a Braves fan, born and raised in Atlanta. If it weren't for the Yankess, I might have 2 or 3 more World Series championships to remember. For now, all I have is 1995.

Thanks for the informative blog. It's been fun to catch up.
